Stable wood moisture in timber yards

Quality assurance for timber using dehumidifiers

Condenser dryer or desiccant dehumidifier? Ask the Industrial Services department

In the past, when storing wood it had been rather a challenge to keep the moisture of furniture wood below the required 9 per cent, for example: If no dehumidifiers are used, seasonal temperature differences and fluctuations in air humidity cause the wood moisture to rise. This considerably affects timber quality and results in problems during processing and even in reject.

Air humidity in the timber yard is crucial to achieve stable timber quality. Wood moisture directly depends on humidity, since every hygroscopic material establishes equilibrium with the quality of the surrounding air. That is why the temperature and product moisture of the stored timber adapt to the conditions of the air. The "equilibrium" is achieved when wood and air do not absorb any more moisture from one another. For storing furniture wood, for example, that means that air humidity must be below 43 per cent for the wood moisture to remain below 9 per cent. For a wood moisture of 11 per cent, air humidity must be stable at 55 per cent. Temperature does not play a part in this. That means there is no heating system required for the timber yard, but only dehumidifiers which feature reliable measurement technology for constant air humidity control.

Whether condenser dryers or desiccant dehumidifiers are the right solution, depends on diverse factors. Feel free to contact us for consultation: Just ask the consultants from our Industrial Services department for help with capacity calculation and choosing the right devices for your timber yard.

Desiccant dehumidifiers of the TTR series in timber yards

Both dehumidifier series can be used in timber yards: In large halls, the large stationary desiccant dehumidifiers of the TTR seriess also reliably operate at temperatures down to -20 °C. The largest dehumidifier of that series, the TTR 13500, for example, dehumidifies 13,300 cubic metres of air per hour. For such large devices, dry air can be supplied through air hoses mounted on the ceiling. The TTR series impresses with high-stability silica gel sorption rotors and the TTR functional principle. Monoventic control electronics, premium fan, integrated heat recovery as well as microprocessor control with plain text display and energy management are all further benefits.

The alternative: Industrial condenser dryers of the DH series

In addition to desiccant dehumidifiers of the TTR series, the stationary DH condenser dryers can also be used for dehumidification in timber yards. With 2,200 cubic metres of air per hour, the largest model of this series, the DH 160, has a capacity similar to the comparable model of the TTR series. These dehumidifiers are made of high-quality, highly resistant components and are particularly suitable for continuous dehumidification in timber yards. Because they are condenser dryers, DH devices not only feature a high dehumidification performance, but are also very economical.

Data loggers ensure stable air humidity and wood moisture

To keep the air humidity in a timber yard for furniture wood constantly at 40 per cent so that the wood moisture remains below 9 per cent, the measurement technology must be reliable. The data loggers of the MultiMeasure Professional series, DL200H and DL200X, which are made in Germany, offer diverse options for tamper-proof long-term measurements. These data loggers ensure constant timber quality until delivery.

Upon request, we also produce customized desiccant dehumidifiers as special models

Upon request, we will readily produce tailor-made desiccant dehumidifiers as special models “made in Germany” perfectly geared to your needs, e.g.:

  • TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers with hygienic design
  • TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers for PWIS-free dry air
  • TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers with extremely low dew point

Makes use of the possibility of having special models with tailored components for your individual needs planned, designed and manufactured in close consultation with our specialists.

  • Dehumidification in fertilizer storage facilities

The production of hygroscopic materials in the chemical industry requires intuition and sure instincts. After all, the substances love water and readily absorb the moisture contained in the ambient air. And this can have disastrous economic consequences. As it binds water, the material starts sticking together and clumping, and may become unusable in the worst case. One example are fertilizers. If...

  • Dehumidification in wind turbine component depots

In the construction phase of a wind turbine, the plant’s components are sometimes stored for months in very large depots such as halls or temporary storage tents prior to assembly. To prevent damage caused by corrosion or frost during storage, a sophisticated system for humidity regulation is necessary.

  • Dehumidification of appliance rooms

Proper protective equipment and perfectly functioning devices are indispensable for operations by the fire brigade and the THW. Protective suits, hoses and tubes must be absolutely leakproof. Tools such as spreader forceps and bolt cutters have to be in an immaculate condition, just like technical devices such as high-performance fans, cutting torches and headlights. In order to store the whole...

  • Dehumidification in drying rooms

In the production of electronic equipment and semiconductors humidity can lead to electrostatic charge. For this reason, sensitive processing steps are being performed in cleanrooms and drying rooms. The mobile adsorption dryers of the TTR series are ideal for these high requirements during dehumidification.

  • Dehumidification circuit board storages

When storing printed circuit boards humidity can lead to electrostatic charge and patina formation or corrosion. Particularly suited for dehumidifying the PCB storage space are the mobile adsorption dryers of the TTR series – just as well as for other operating sectors in the electronics and semiconductor production.

  • Dehumidification dispatch & transport

In the silo as well as during transport hygroscopic bulk material is endangered by humidity – this holds true for both the chemical and the pharmaceutical industry. Humidity continues to be a problem after production, because the products are mostly packed into damageable cardboard boxes with paper inserts. Therefore, dehumidification also plays a key role for storage, dispatch and transport.
